This is a dual band 802.11ac AC1200 fast ethernet wireless router. There are four non-detachable antennas and a USB2 port.

Getting started with a new Device Page

Installation

OEM installation using Asus Recovery firmware tool

  1. Download the Asus recovery firmware (windows) tool from http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/LiveUpdate/Release/Wireless/Rescue.zip
  2. Set your ethernet IP manually 192.168.1.5 / 255.255.255.0 with NO gateway. It is also might be important to disable any other network adaptor on your PC for the time of installation.
  3. Plug in your ethernet to LAN port 1 on the router.
  4. Load up the recovery software with the initramfs-kernel.bin firmware file, but don't press “Upload” yet.
  5. Plug in the router to power WHILE HOLDING the reset button in. While CONTINUING to hold the button, select “Upload”. Continue to hold the Reset button in until it finishes and verifies!
  6. If that doesn't work try pressing “Upload” first just before you do step 5. At some point while holding reset the rescue tool will finally detect and upload the firmware. That's when you can let go of the Reset button.
  7. The router will reboot and not much will happen. Wait a minute or two.
  8. Now connect to your router with web interface on 192.168.1.1. Default password is root.
  9. Go to Network - Backup / Flash firmware - Actions. Under “Flash new firmware image” press “Flash image” and select your squashfs-sysupgrade.bin file, then press “Upload”.
  10. After automatic reboot your instalation is complete and you can begin setting up your network.

OEM installation using the TFTP method

Upgrading OpenWrt

LuCI Web Upgrade Process

  • Browse to http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/mini/system/upgrade/ LuCI Upgrade URL
  • Upload image file for sysupgrade to LuCI
  • Wait for reboot

Terminal Upgrade Process

If you don't have a GUI (LuCI) available, you can alternatively upgrade via the command line. There are two command line methods for upgrading:

  • sysupgrade
  • mtd

Note: It is important that you put the firmware image into the ramdisk (/tmp) before you start flashing.

sysupgrade

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
sysupgrade /tmp/xxx.abc

mtd

If sysupgrade does not support this router, use mtd.

  • Login as root via SSH on 192.168.1.1, then enter the following commands:
cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/XXX/xxx.abc
mtd write /tmp/xxx.abc linux && reboot

Debricking

Use the Asus Firmware recovery tool to install the Asus stock firmware image for the RT-AC1200.

Numbers 0-3 are Ports 1-4 as labeled on the unit, number 4 is the Internet (WAN) on the unit, 5 is the internal connection to the router itself. Don't be fooled: Port 1 on the unit is number 3 when configuring VLANs. vlan0 = eth0.0, vlan1 = eth0.1 and so on.

Opening the case

THe top and the bottom are held by simple plastic clips. Insert something flat, preferably a spudger, in the gap between top and bottom halves and keep working it around the edge. The case will open.
